where nature gets a second life.
For jewelry, I order a majority of my silver materials and stones from small businesses. I also spend a lot of my free time collecting natural materials from around my home (mostly sea glass, gemstones, and shell pieces). From there, I can create pieces that combine the silver that I buy with my naturally sourced materials to create unique pieces that combine a natural lightness with a strong and structurally sound foundation. No two pieces will ever be the same. I then can melt down all the scrap silver from those pieces and make my “recycled silver” ring collection.
For ceramics I use sustainable, lead free clay and glazes, my ceramic pieces are completely hand made, glazed, and fired by me. Each piece is created with a touch of nature, whether it be design, shape, or color.
Who is g.e.m?
Born and raised in the small town of Sedona, Arizona. Being raised in such a beautiful corner of this earth I gained a deep love and respect for nature, always hiking and observing the little pieces of magic along the trails, my family not only showed me the importance of nature but also the appreciation and wonder of art, and how those two things co-exist constantly. My passion started young, I was an imaginative kid, always doodling and crafting, the creative side always took over (these attributes often lead to me getting in trouble at school;)). During the summers of my childhood I practiced ceramics with my amazingly talented aunt in Santa Cruz. I quickly fell in love with it but didn't harness my talents in clay until my freshman year in college, since then I haven't been able to keep my hands clean! Fast forward a couple years, I moved to Hawaii and I decided that I was going to teach myself silversmithing, I bought all the materials and just “went for it”, it was daunting and I burnt myself far too many times and created a lot of piece that "only a mother could love" ;) but with a whole lot of dedication and will power, I have finally gained enough confidence in my pieces to not only post about them, but also to sell them to amazing people like you!
